What will you learn?

In a regular week most people feel there are times they could have been “more assertive”. By which we mean; being able to express our point of view in a way that is clear and direct, while still respecting others. This is a great idea but hard to do in practise. There is a fine line between being passive, aggressive and assertive behaviour and for each of us that looks and sounds a little different.
Communicating in an assertive manner can help you to minimise conflict, control anger and have your needs better met. In this practical workshop we discover how you can find your version of assertive communication.

How will you learn?

We can only change other people by how we communicate with them. To do this we focus on partnership. We want to create an environment that balances interests and aims for long-term success. Both parties should feel that they are equal in communication. We learn how to be present, physically and emotionally, to support our message. We practise how to focus on our partner and try to understand their interests and to motivate them. People often use relative status to get what they want. We aim to get them to stop using this behaviour.

Areas of focus

We learn to be comfortable expressing our needs. We build self-reflection to understand our own positions and interests. Develop curiosity about the other person’s point of view. We work on being open and flexible enough to change our goals. We practise how to look and sound like a good partner. Maintaining a friendly approach even when it is difficult. We work on asking good questions and listening to the answers, even when you don’t like what you are hearing. We discover how to create an alliance, diagnose the problem, make and take good suggestions and then make the solution happen.
